Tribute to Lemmy

28th December 2015. Metal sees one of the pioneering Metal gods, Lemmy, die. To many this was a man who was immortal. His lifestyle being the very spirit of Metal. Rumoured to drink a bottle of Jack a day the man (until recently) seemed a medical marvel! How was he doing it! It wasn’t meant to be forever. I can’t help but think of lines from one of his biggest songs ‘Ace of Spades’: “But that’s the way I like it baby, I don’t want to live forever!”
His band mates have already spoken about listening to his music LOUD and drinking to him. I wholeheartedly agree! This was a man who loved what he did and loved his life and fans. This was why he and Motörhead was the Golden God of MetalHammer 2013 and this is how he has touched
the hearts of many. We’ve had documentaries dedicated to him and books proclaiming him as a sex god. There is no surprise that this man was such a big part of the Metal community and was such a pivotal figure to all his fans. The film Airheads (1994) understood this well in a scene proclaiming Lemmy as God. His status is up there with Chuck Norris. If you only need to understand Metal you only need look at someone like Lemmy.

Be it New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Rock and Roll or Thrash Metal he has had a defining influence on so much of what Metal is and I still say that Motörhead’s ‘Orgasmatron’ is a Black Metal song through and through even before Satyricon covered it. With Hawkwind Lemmy found himself as a musician and their biggest song ‘Silver Machine’ featured his iconic vocals on it. His vocals reflect a landmark in developing the Metal Voice – his rough vocals growling before many others would try it. He was a founding member of Motörhead and we’ve had 40 years of them! To name a few hits not already metnioned: ‘Deaf Forever’, ‘Hellraiser’, ‘Killed By Death’, ‘Stone Dead
